The Gomoa West district Assembly has set aside 35,000 Ghana Cedis from its District Education Fund to assist local needy but brilliantly students to further their education.
The District chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah said this at a parade of school children to mark the celebration of the nation’s 54th Independence Anniversary at Apam on Sunday.
He said last year the Assembly distributed 2,500 fire uniforms and will distribute 6,200 additional uniforms this year to some basic schools pupils in deprived areas.
The Assembly has also supplied learning materials and 88,105 exercise books to some basic schools to boost education in the district, he said.
The DCE said last year, only two basic schools scored zero percent in the Basic Education Certificate Examination as against nine schools in the previous year due to intervention that have been put in by the Assembly.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the Assembly has also established an Information Communication Centre and completed a Community Library which was started by the former Members of Parliament, Mr Joe Kingsley Hackman, at Apam.
He therefore appealed to teachers to do their best to help promote education in the district.
The Queen Mother of Apam, Nana Essel Botwe III, expressed concern about the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy in the area and appealed to girls to resist men who lure them into sexual relationships.
Nana Botwe further appealed to the Ghana Education Service to re-introduce the Book, “Courtesy for boys and girls” which teaches good manners.
The Gomoa West District Director of Education, Mrs Augusta Akyea Sarpong, asked the children to guard against indiscipline.
The chief of Apam, Nana Effrim X, who chaired the function, advised parents not to abuse their children with vulgar language.
