ActionAid Ghana, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has commended the Government for taking step to ensure that more women are appointed into the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). The NGO said it is heart-warming that Government has issued a circular instructing the MMDAs to appoint 40 percent of women into the assemblies, considering the abysmal performance of women at the just ended District Assembly Elections. A statement signed by Madam Adwoa Kwateng Kluvitse, Country Director of ActionAid Ghana, said that the appointment would improve grassroots democracy. It said that the NGO supported a total of 433 women to be elected in the 2010 District Assembly Elections in six regions but only 114 of them were elected. The statement said such a development was discouraging in view of the enthusiasm with which women actively participated in the electioneering. It called for strict compliance with the circular so that an appreciable number of women could contribute their quota to local governance. The statement said the NGO would continue to monitor MMDAs and the Government to ensure that the circular was enforced. The NGO said it would support the 40 percent appointment initiative by providing any interested appointing body with a list of all women who had acquired various skills that it had worked with and were ready to be part of local governance.
