The president of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs is scandalized at the wayward dressing by some Ghanaian youth and has called for urgent action. Naa SD Goree II says the country’s law makers must, if possible, enact laws to prescribe appropriate dress code before the youth begins to walk naked on the streets. “The issue of improper dressing by the youth; both boys and girls gives cause for alarm. Parliament should as a matter of urgency look at the issue and if possible prescribe a dressing code for the country before the youth start walking naked in our streets,” he said. He made the urgent call during a courtesy call on him by President John Evans Atta Mills during his five day tour of the Northern and Upper Regions of Ghana. In Nigeria a similar bill was sent to the National Assembly titled: “An Act to Prohibit and Punish Public Nudity, Sexual Intimidation and Related Offences.” It is not clear yet if Ghana’s Parliament will take a cue from it. Naa Goree also slammed the foot soldiers of the ruling party for virtually hounding ministers and District Chief Executives out of office. He said the foot soldiers must allow the public officers “to deliver instead of constantly harassing them to the extent of threatening their lives.” The footsoldier phenomenon is littered across the country with seizures of state offices and public places of convenience. He said the youth must take time to learn from their leaders and not seek immediate power. Na Goree also charged the president to conduct due diligence by consulting stakeholders including the chiefs in the various districts before terminating the appointments of DCEs after agitations by people purporting to be concerned youth.
