Many waste management companies operating in Accra are struggling to stay in business because of the city authority’s indebtedness to them. Joy News has learnt the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) owes these companies over GHS9 million. But head of AMA’s Waste Management Department, Blay Anderson told Joy News the government has promised to pay off some of the debt in the coming weeks. He explained that the Polluter Pays Policy has also helped to ease the financial burden of the city authority. "AMA was spending a whole lot of money. On the average we were spending around GHS1 million a month to pay for garbage collection but now this money has reduced drastically to about GHS200,000 per month," said Mr. Anderson.
