His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, Head of the Catholic Church, has appointed the Reverend Father Alfred Agyenta as the new Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese.
Archbishop Leon Kalenga, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, who made the announcement at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, said the choice of Rev Father Agyenta as bishop was not because he was from the area.
“We are preaching Jesus Christ not tribes,” he said.
Archbishop Kalenga appealed to members of the diocese to unite and support the new bishop to carry out his duties well, saying “The church is one family.”
The ordination of the new bishop would probably take place in July 2011.
The new Bishop would succeed the late Most Reverend Lucas Abadamloora, who passed away on December 23, 2009.
Rev Fr Agyenta was born in Wiagha in the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese on January 20, 1959 to Sylvester and Diana Agyenta.
He had his elementary schooling in Wiagha from 1964-1974 and continued at the Minor Seminary of the Diocese in Navrongo from 1974-1979.
After his Sixth Form education in Nandom Secondary School, he entered the Saint Victor’s Major Seminary in 1981 and was ordained priest on August 6, 1988 for the diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga.
He was appointed curate to the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Cathedral, Navrongo, from 1988-1991 and was sent to Rome for studies at the Biblicum.
When he returned home, he was appointed Lecturer and Formator at the St. Victor’s Major Seminary from 1995-2000.
Rev Fr Agyenta then went to Belgium for his doctorate and returned in 2006 as a staff of St Victor’s and St. Augustine Millennium Seminary till date.
