The Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central has unveiled a 4-Way Test Plaque in memory of their past president Sophia Twum-Barima who died last year.The posthumous honour, according to the club, is in recognition of her good leadership and the prominent role she played in securing sponsorship for their two 3-unit classroom block and water and sanitation facilities at Asempanaye, a village in the Akwapim North District of the Eastern region.Sophia Twum-Barima died at the Leister Hospital in the United Kingdom on Saturday, December 18, 2010.Galina Okartei-Akko, president of the club in an interview with Myjoyonline.com said Sophia Twum-Barima though under her leadership faced a lot of challenges, did not succumb to them but lived by the tenets of the club.She said Twum-Barima’s leadership style motivated members to work hard to improve the health, sanitation and education of the people in the communities within which they find themselves.“Sophia was an active member and touched a lot of our lives and lived by the tenets of Rotary; it just had to be that we honour her.”On reasons why they decided to mount the plague at the premises of the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotarian Galina Okartei-Akko explained that they (WHO) recognized the hard work Sophia did as their Public Relations Officer and believed she needed to be honoured.“They do believe in what we are doing and do recognize the hard work Sophia had done in this world both in Rotary and in their offices; so they agreed that we could set up a plague in her memory”.She observed that the club is presently focused on completing the two 3-unit classroom block estimated at $60,000 to improve access to education in Asempanaye.The President said the club would continue to raise funds and give back to deprived communities.In appreciation, a member of the family of the late Sophia Twum-Barima, Lt Col. Felicia Twum-Barima said the family was very honoured by the gesture from Rotary and WHO.She said it indicated that their sister contributed her quota to the society.
