A former member of National Democratic Congress' (NDC) National Executive Council, John Owusu Agyemang has called on President Mills to resign as the leader of the party if he intends to contest for the flagbearership position of the party in the July Congress.
Lawyer Owusu Agyemang who is also a former Brong Ahafo Chairman of the NDC said since the NDC constitution stipulates that any member of the National Executive Committee who intends to contest for the flagbearership position of the party should resign, President Mills must respect it and act accordingly.
“Our Constitution says any NEC member who intends to contest in the race as the flagbearer of the party will first have to resign his position before 60 days to the congress,” he emphasized.
Lawyer John Owusu Agyemang made these comments on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, while commenting on the resignation by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, as Vice Chairperson of the NDC to enable her contest the flagbearership position in July.
According to him, Mrs Rawling's resignation qualifies her to contest the party’s flagbearership slot for Election 2012.
Lawyer Agyemang explained that the constitution makes provision for the Chairman to act as the party’s leader in the interim, until a substantive leader is elected.
He also faults Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives as well as some party members who make public declarations and endorsements in support of a particular candidate, describing them as breaching the constitution of the party.
