A 16-year-old student of the Tema Community 8 No.1 Junior High School, Joseph Kwabena Dankwa, drowned at the Titanic Beach on Monday while celebrating the successful completion of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with his classmates.
The occasion also coincided with the birthday of one of the pupils in the class.
Dankwah and other classmates took time off to enjoy themselves at the beach and top it up with a football match.
But just before the kick off of the match, fishermen at the beach warned them of the rough nature of the sea and advised them not to swim, which they obeyed.
However, while the game was on, one of them played the ball towards the sea and Joseph dashed to kick it back onto the field of play, but in the process was swept away by the waves.
The other children raised an alarm which attracted the fishermen, but try as they did; they could not save him.
Confirming the story to the Ghanaian Times, Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said the case was reported to the Sakumono Police on Monday, around 2:00p.m and investigations were ongoing.
