There is more confusion in the executive of the group known as the Alliance for Responsible Opposition (AFRO) as its members have directed the Registrar-General Department to immediately dissolve the group. Sharing this sentiment, the National Press Secretary, Mr. Anuga Fortune, cited “certain dubious and unscrupulous characters within the group that have involved the group in various illicit businesses.” Confusion first broke in the rank of the executive of AFRO early this year when some executive members, including Mr. Lord Hammah and Mr. Anuga Fortune, accused a former executive member, Mr. Benjamin Akyena Brantuo, of impropriety, an allegation Mr. Brantuo denied. As a result, Mr. Brantuo resigned from the group. But in a swift back turn, Mr. Anuga in a statement early this week vindicated Mr. Brantuo, saying that the dismissal of Mr. Brantuo was masterminded by Lord Hammah and other executive members, a plot to get rid of him (Brantuo) in order to reduce the group into a family chattel. He said they plotted to get rid of Brantuo because he was becoming more influential in the corridors of the powers-that-be, a situation which was a threat to others. According to the release, there was the fear that Brantuo will become a conduit through which funds will come forth to the group. The release said, “Getting Brantuo out of the way was, therefore, non- regrettable”. It said, “Our decision to dissolve the group is borne out of the fact that we can no longer vouch for the sanctity and sanity of the group as far as its activities and avowed aims and objectives are concerned.” “Sir, given that all directors are liable to prosecution, severally and jointly, if any member uses the name of the group for any illicit and underhand dealings, we are passionately appealing to your coveted office to dissolve it with immediate effect,” the release stressed.
