The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) said it had not registered a bottled water with the name DEW and has advised the public to report any person who offered that DEW Bottled Water for sale. A statement signed by Dr Stephen K. Opuni, Chief Executive of the FDB and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said rumours had suggested that the DEW Bottled Water was imported from Tanzania into Nigeria and was alleged to contain a chemical that has caused the death of 180 persons in that country. It said the FDB established that the rumour was false after investigations it conducted including post market surveillance activities and contacts with the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Tanzanian Bureau of Standards. Information from NAFDAC indicates that DEW Bottled Water is produced in Nigeria and has been registered by NAFDAC and added that it has no information that the registered DEW Bottled Water has caused the death of any persons in Nigeria, the statement added. Again, Nigeria has for a long time banned the importation of drinking water into Nigeria and, therefore, the rumour of DEW Bottled Water having been imported from Tanzania is not true. The statement said the FDB will, however, continue with its surveillance and collaborate further with its regional counterparts and other local state institutions to ensure the safety of the Ghanaian consumer. It assured the general public of its resolve to protect public health and safety. Source: GNA/Ghana
