The police at Suhum on Tuesday arrested a 35-year-old farmer, Yao Odei, for allegedly murdering his friend, Nartey Asane, a 41-year-old farmer, because he owed him GH¢5.
A police source told the Ghana News Agency that both Odei and Asane were good friends and lived in Anum Apapam Ahudzo, near Suhum.
The source said the deceased and the suspect had an arrangement whereby they assisted each other to weed their farms and that whoever absented himself was to pay GH¢5 as penalty.
According to the source, on June 08, the deceased was supposed to go and weed Odei’s farm but failed to do so.
The suspect who returned from the farm in the evening spotted the deceased at a drinking spot and confronted him to pay him the GH¢5 fine.
The source said a fight ensued and Odei allegedly held Asane’s throat until he became unconscious.
A Good Samaritan, who found Asane in a helpless situation, rushed him to the Suhum Government Hospital but died soon on admission.
