Government has apologised to Dr. Sekou Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah, after he boycotted celebrations honoring his late father in Accra Wednesday.
Dr Nkrumah said he felt slighted and was worried that the Founders’ Day celebrations, instituted by the Mills-led NDC Government to unite all Ghanaians, is rather being used to divide the Nkrumah family because he had been critical of the administration.
But Deputy Information Minister Baba Jamal told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show it was not government’s intention to frustrate Dr Sekou Nkrumah.
“I met him and told him that we have changed the sitting arrangement so we took him to where the ministers and the diplomatic corps were sitting. So it was not any bad place or any place to slight him.”
He described the situation as unfortunate, adding if Dr Nkrumah “feels bad about that we respect that. I want to assure him that there was no any deliberate attempt to slight him just because of his ideas or his criticisms [of the government]…I think that is a sad situation that has come out of all this successful celebration of the birthday of the founder.”
