The Agona West Municipal Police Command is pursuing a 39-year-old professional driver suspected to have murdered Mohammed Barnes, an unemployed and a returnee from Nigeria, at Gomoa Ekwamkrom, near Swedru. The name of the suspect, who is on the run, has not been released by the police for security reasons. The Deputy Superintendent Commander in charge of the Municipal Police Command, Shaibu Osei, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, said the deceased's body had been deposited at the Swedru Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy. He added that his outfit had mounted a search for the alleged assailant because they suspected foul play. The municipal commander said preliminary investigations had revealed that the deceased died as a result of severe bleeding from a strike with a sharp bamboo branch at the back of his head. According to the investigations, the alleged murderer stayed with Monica and her daughter at Yariwa Zongo at Swedru. Three months ago, a misunderstanding arose between the suspect and Monica which led her to move to live in her own four-room house at Gomoa Ekwamkrom, together with her daughter. According to the Police, Mohammed Barnes was a tenant of Monica who is believed to have had relationships with Barnes before he left for “greener pastures” in Nigeria. The suspect, the police added, occasionally paid visits to Monica at her house at Ekwamkrom. At 11:00.p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011, the suspect visited Monica and found her sitting on the verandah of her house with the Mohamed Barnes. The suspect immediately attacked Barnes and later hit him with a sharp bamboo stick, which sent him sprawling on the floor, Commander Shaibu said. The suspect then told Monica: “I have hit him. Go and see it.” He immediately left the scene. As Monica was trying to pour water on the deceased in order to revive him, the suspect returned to the house and attempted to harm Monica and the daughter but they ran into the bush. Commander Shaibu said Barnes managed to lift himself up and attempted to walk to the roadside but he fell down again and died at the Ekwamkrom-Mando Junction.
