The Ghana Nurses and Midwifery Trainees Association Monday afternoon announced a strike to protest low allowances.
The association is demanding 80 to 90 percent rise in salaries. Its president, Andrew Tetteh Holyfield, told Joy News their allowances are woefully inadequate.
He explained they had suffered low remuneration for over ten years and have decided to take action now.
Some take as low as GHS45.00 per month he claimed.
According to him several petitions to their mother body have yielded no positive results.
He said the Fair Wages and Salary Commission in a recent meeting proposed an increase which he described as “woefully inadequate.”
The withdrawal of their services has become necessary, he noted.
He said some of the nurses who graduated since 2008 have not even received their salaries.
The association has sent a petition to the Ministry of Health for redress.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, said the allowances of the Nurses have been increased from GHS50.00 to GHS210 and will be paid at the end of this month.
He said all health workers are at the moment locked up in a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salary Commission over the single spine and hoped that the wages of all workers would improve when the single spine comes on board.
