Doctors have announced a nationwide strike beginning Saturday, October 8, 2011.The doctors are protesting failure by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in addressing issues relating to their placement onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.President of the Ghana Medical Association Dr. Emmanuel Adom Winful told Joy News their action is justifiable.According to him, the association has drawn the attention of the sector ministry, and the presidency to their plight but nothing concrete has been done.“We have approached the Fair Wages and Salary Commission; we have gone to the Labour Commission; we’ve gone to the ministry of labour; we have being to our own ministry- the Ministry of Health; we have written even to the office of the president, so what else is there for us to do? Tell us,” he lamented.The Association early on issued a statement announcing the strike action, explaining that it does not see its grievances addressed close of day Friday. “Looking at the stands of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission it appears unlikely that any attempt is being made to address our concerns.“In the light of this, the National Executive Council of the Ghana Medical Association has decided that the road map as stated in the press statement issued in Tamale on the 24th of September, 2011 should come into effect.“After 7th October 2011 if the conditions above are not met, the National Executive Council of the Ghana Medical Association after taking into consideration the frustrations and concerns of members, has instructed all doctors to stop work and hold themselves in readiness for further instructions,” the statement read in part,” the statement said.
