AngloGold Ashanti Iduapreim Mine through it Basic Education Improvement Project aimed at improving educational standards in its operational area has invested over GHC12,000 in 45 students and four teachers in four basic schools in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality.
Ten of the students and the four teachers were sponsored to participate in Mathematics Clinic organised by the Ghana Education Service with resources persons from Meagasa Mathematics Academy in Takoradi.
Continuing students received various sums of money in cheques to enable them continue tertiary education in the country.
Commending the students for qualifying for AngloGold Ashanti scholarship, the Managing Director, Mr. Sicelo Ntuli, advised the students to put in their best to justify the support given them.
He said “it is our hope to see some of you becoming mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists and other professionals to work in Iduapriem Mine in future”.
Mr Emmanuel Baidoo, the Community Affairs Manager of the Mine, in an interview, said about 20 fresh students have been selected for the 2011/2012 academic year bringing the total number of students benefitting from the company’s scholarship scheme to 55.
Ms Aba Bentum, Headteacher of Teberebie School and participant of the Maths Clinic praised the AngloGold Ashanti for the opportunity which she acknowledged had exposed them to the new dynamics in the study of Mathematics at the basic level of education.
On her part, Linda Akosah Danso of Adieyie Basic School said the clinic has given her the opportunity to learn new ways of solving mathematical questions and hopes to pass with high grade in the Basic Education Certificate Examination next year.
