Mr Wahab Suhuyini Wumbei, the Tolon/Kumbungu District Chief Executive, has urged parents to educate their children to help build the requisite human resource for the administration of the country now and the future. He said the capitation grant and the school-feeding programme initiated by the government and other similar interventions by NGOs should encourage parents to send their children to school and support them to enable the country derive the benefits of education. "The youth also owe it a responsibility to take advantage of the opportunities provided to develop their God-given talents through education to help them contribute their quota to nation-building", he said. Mr Wumbei made the call in an address delivered on his behalf at the opening of a youth forum at Dalun in the Tolon/Kumbungu District on Saturday. The Ghanaian Development Communities Association (GDCP), an NGO, organised the three-day forum with sponsorship from the Danish International Development Association (DANIDA). Some 150 Ghanaian youth from the Northern Region and their Danish counterparts are attending the forum on: "Creating possibilities for youth development". They would learn to design a youth project through identification and analysis of problems, objectives, risks and assumptions to promote youth development. Mr Wumbei told the forum that the government had fashioned plans and programmes to develop the youth as future leaders, mentioning the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) as one of such initiatives. He mentioned agro-business; auxiliary nursing; sanitation; community protection; forestation and information and communication technology (ICT) as some of the modules of the NYEP and urged the youth to enrol with the programme for their development and enhancement of their living standards. "Indeed, the government will continue to initiate programmes aimed at developing the full potentials of the youth", he said. Mr Osman Abdel-Rahman, Executive Secretary of GDCA, said the programme (forum) whose objective was to position the youth as active agents of development in society, started three years ago through the collaboration of GDCA and its Danish counterpart. He said the association had focused on youth development in view of the critical role the youth played in national development. Besides, he said, the youth formed a significant proportion of the country's population while they also formed the most active population regarded as the future leaders. Mr Abdel-Rahman expressed the hope that the forum would inspire the participants to share ideas and experiences in the process of designing a document, which would enhance the development of the youth.
