The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has vowed to expose a prominent figure in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) whom he alleged is a swindler and a conman robbing the State in broad day light. Mr Agyapong, referring to Mr Alfred Agbesi Woyome - an NDC guru who reportedly contributed extremely generously at a recent fund-raising ceremony for the party and also funded some officials of the NDC to witness the 2010 World Cup in South Africa – said he would make public the deviousness of Mr Woyome so that President Mills will realise the true character of some of the people he is dealing with. He said it is characters like Woyome that ex-President Rawlings was referring to when he said Mills has surrounded himself with greedy bastards. Ken Agyapong was commenting on a publication in the Thursday edition of the Chronicle newspaper which reported that GHS42million has been dubiously doled out to the NDC guru under suspicious circumstances, in an interview with Adom FM’s Adakabre Frimpong–Manso on Wednesday. According to the publication, an Accra High Court has ordered the State to settle Mr Woyome with GHS41,811,480.59 as compensation for loses he suffered because of being denied a bid he won to build stadia prior to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. The report claimed the verdict was given after the Attorney General (AG) failed to appear in court to defend the State on the matter. The Assin North MP was unhappy that the State had to pay Mr Woyome such an amount for “no work done”. He explained Mr Woyome entered a bid to renovate the country’s stadia before the Nation’s Cup but lost. Alfred Woyome, the NPP MP said, sued the State and has now been awarded the above mentioned figure. The paper quotes the trial judge as saying "the plaintiff invoked the court's jurisdiction for judgment on the grounds of the Defendants' default in filing a defence within the time stipulated by the rules of the court.” And Mr Agyapong contends something is amiss. “For no work done, the Attorney General failed to appear in court and the court also granted [Woyome this amount of money],” Ken grumbled, arguing that even if the A-G failed to defend the nation the Court should have put the interest of the nation first. He vowed to ensure Mr Woyome is jailed for his criminal activities. But Mr Woyome’s brother, Kwabena Mensah Woyome who is also the MP for South Tongu, responded to the allegations, saying Ken Agyapong lacks knowledge of the issue. He explained that his brother led a company called Waterville to win a bid to renovate and construct new stadia in preparation for the African Cup of Nations but noted it took one person in the then government [whom he did not name] to turn down the offer. Kwabena Woyome, who said his brother Alfred is out of the country but will respond appropriately on his return, further stated that Alfred had advanced in processes to have the work done before it was taken away; something he said cost his brother a great deal of money. Therefore the government had to settle Mr Woyome so he could meet his commitment towards his partners in order not to offend international laws. He however stated there was more to the issue than he could reveal at the moment. Kwabena alleged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government inflated the total cost for the renovation and building of the stadia to about three or four times the cost Waterville would have had the same work done but assured his brother will “open the Pandora's box” at the appropriate time.
