Joy News has learnt that members of the Ghana Medical Association are likely to be migrated onto the Single Spine Salary by the end of this December. The doctors embarked on a strike in October to protest delays in their migration and it took the intervention of the National Labour Commission to get them and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to agree on a compulsory arbitration package. Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages Commission, George Smith Graham has told Joy News the major disagreements which stalled the migration of the medical doctors have been addressed and adds that migrating the medical doctors will pave the way for the movement of the last group of public sector workers by next year. “We’ve already finished working on it from our end, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and it’s gone to Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Finance has worked on it, it’s gone to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department and I think they are working on it seriously and I’m convinced that this month they will be paid.” “We are still working on the others. It is clear that we should be able to hit about 98% and not the 100% that we anticipated. We are at the moment strategising on these institutions to see, I’m even sure that by the end of the year we will be able to complete most of them. The challenge will be that it will not be possible for them to be paid. The simple reason is that in December the Controller and Accountant General’s Department pays salaries very early. The rest of the institutions we are working very hard to complete their migration process and everything and hopefully by January, they will also receive their salaries on the single spine.”
