The Ashaiman Traffic Light Branch of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), has appealed to the police to expedite action in apprehending a group of irate youth who attacked one of the drivers from the branch.
The branch describes the violent attack on the .driver, TwumasiAnkrah, at Ashaiman as “very disgusting,” and urgently urged the police to bring the culprits to book.
According to the Branch, without a police action, the youth who took advantage of the celebration of fire festival at Ashaiman to attack people would continue to misbehave.
Ashaiman near Tema, said to be celebrating the fire festival in Ashaiman, allegedly attacked the 60-year-old driver and his mate without any provocation.
As a result, the driver and his mate sustained serious injuries, while the passenger bus they were operating was destroyed by the youth.
Narrating his ordeal to the Times, Mr. Twumasi Ankrah who was driving a mini-bus with registration number GR 3407 X, said that about 9:00p.m., he was on his way to the main station to carry passengers when he saw a young man who wielding a machete approaching violently and therefore decided to take another route.
He said on taking the alternate route, he realised that a group of youth, made up mostly of men, wielding clubs and machetes, were in a procession and as it was too late for him to turn back, he decided to drive past them.
He alleged that, however, upon getting closer to them members of the group started shouting at him and questioned why he was driving past them with his head lights on.
The driver claimed he remained quiet as the group rained insults on him.
As if the verbal attack was not enough, he alleged they pulled him and his mate out of the vehicle and started beating them up, while others destroyed the vehicle.
He said after the attack; some good Samaritans helped him out of the gutter the attackers had dumped him in, before he was taken to the Ashaiman Police station to report the matter.
Mr. Ankrah, who sustained several injuries, claimed that the attackers also took his mobile phone, a sum of GH¢60 which was his proceeds for two weeks and his driver’s licence.
Sources close at the Ashaiman District Police Command, confirmed the case; saying “it is under investigation” and declined further comments.
The vehicle remains parked at the Police station while investigation is ongoing.
