Eugene Atikpo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of Bank of Ghana has expressed concern about the attitude of some bank cashiers who pay customers with large quantities of coins.
He noted that their action had defeated the main purpose for re-denomination of the cedi.
In a telephone interview, Mr Atikpo appealed to the public to endeavour to find a peaceful and polite means to settle the issue with these cashiers or inform the bank managers to address the issue.
"I do not know the motive behind the action of these cashiers, because money is supposed to be convenient and portable. A good cashier with proper understanding of economics would not behave this way," he stated.
Mr Atikpo expressed appreciation for the co-operation and understanding especially among people in Brong-Ahafo Region towards the exercise describing it "as a wonderful experience" as compared to other regions.
He explained that the exercise was to build public confidence in the banks and urged the public to maintain a good rapport with the banks to enable them access the new currency since the old currency would seize to be a legal tender by December 31 but could be changed at the banks.
Mr Atikpo advised the public to understand the new cedi, be careful when changing money and desist from insisting on high denomination.
