Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives are being urged to champion the cause of Information and Communication Technology education in their communities. Chief Executive of Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, Kofi Attoh, says this will help speed up economic growth for their people. He stated that as political heads of their respective areas, Chief Executives must themselves be abreast with modern technology to facilitate their work. Mr. Attoh spoke at an ICT training programme for fourteen municipal and ad district chief executives from Ashanti, Bono Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and West Regions. The training programme took place at Nkwantakese in the Afigya Kwabre District. The GIFEC Universal Access to Electronic Communication Programme has rolled out several initiatives nationwide to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities. One of the projects is the Community Information Center which serves as the district information hub to provide connectivity for residents. Two hundred and 30 of such centers equipped with computers and internet facilities are expected to be built in each constituency at an estimated cost of about 35 thousand U.S. dollars each. Mr. Attor asked DCEs and MCEs to take charge of the centres to improve the lot of their people since they have the capacity to create employment and generate income. Coordinating Director of Local Government Service, Botingnoa Musah Al-hassan, announced all financial transactions by government will soon be done electronically. He said this will take effect when the Ghana Integrated Financial Management System becomes operational. Mr. Alhassan implored local assemblies to ensure the necessary structures are put in place for ICT education.
