A thirty five year old taxi driver who knocked down a mother and her son in a hit-and-run incident has been fined GH¢ 720 (¢ 7.2 million) by an Accra Motor Court.
In addition, he is to pay the victims (¢5 million) as compensation or in default go to jail for eight moths.
The prosecution said when the breath of the driver, Francis Akorli was tested for alcohol level; it measured 187 units instead of 0.08.
The Nima Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Angwubutoga Awuni said that Akorli knocked the woman, Miriam Nuru and her son, Tetteh at Nima last Saturday but failed to stop.
He was however arrested by a policeman who witnessed the incident and offered him a chase.
According to Mr Awuni, Akorli said in his defence that he was not aware that he had hit the two.
However he admitted to drunk driving.
