One of the first female radiographers in the Gold Coast era, Mrs Salomey Francois, has raised great concern about the problems faced by children living with autism and has called on all to join hands to help in finding solution to the situation.
She shared her concern during an interview with Joy FM’s Ultimate Health Programme Tuesday.
According to her, though autism is not contagious, most people whose children are normal find it difficult to allow their children play with other children with special needs (autism).
Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects the function and development of a person's brain, communication and socio-interaction skills, she said.
Experts believe that autism presents itself during the first three years of a person's life.
There have not been any codified causes of autism excerpt in Ghana and some parts of Africa where people associate the causes of the disease with superstitions and witchcraft.
She said some researchers and research institutions around the globe are however battling to fish out causes of the problem since it is not just a national issue, but a burden to the world in general.
Mrs Salomey Francois noted that many men (fathers) run away from their wives to suffer alone in the upbringing of their children with special needs. She therefore urged all parents and guardians to join hands and partake in educating these vulnerable children.
