An 18-year- old trader was on Tuesday sentenced to 10 year’s imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing a taxi valued 40 million cedis.
But it was a bad day for Kabiru Yaro's relatives who shed tears after the sentence was handed down on him.
Yaro pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and stealing but the court at the end of the trial found him guilty and sentenced him to a 10-year imprisonment.
The court further ordered that the Toyota Corona taxi with Registration number GR 230 B be returned to the owner, Mr Michael Asre.
Chief Inspector Major Otabil told the court that the complainant were Policemen stationed at Nima Police station.
Prosecution said on August 14, this year, at about 0330 hours the Policemen were on their usual patrol duties and on reaching the Bus Stop Restaurant, they spotted Yaro and three others now at large in the taxiChief Inspector Otabil said Yaro and his accomplice declined to stop when the Police asked them to do so.
The police therefore chased them and managed to apprehend Yaro, while the others escaped leaving the taxi behind.
The taxi was towed to the Police station and on August 20, this year, Mr Asre went to the Police station to claim ownership.
Mr. Asre told the Police that the taxi was parked in front of his house at Mataheko and he went to sleep but when he woke up he realised that it had been stolen.Source: GNA
