Several shops at the Lawra market in the Upper West Region were razed down when fire swept through the place Saturday night. The blaze comes after a similar incident barely a year ago. It took fire fighters hours to quell the inferno as the thatch roofs of the shops provided ready fuel.Officials have yet to confirm the cause of the fire but eyewitnesses trace it to food vendors in the market.Anchara Adams a resident of Lawra told Joy News he was at a funeral when he saw a very thick smoke in the air almost 500 metres from the funeral grounds. He said “on reaching the place, we realized that the eastern part of the market was completely burnt down.”According to Anchara, “one person had his leg broken,” in the incident which saw about 75 shops completely burnt. He commended the Fire Service for bringing the blaze under control.
