The Electoral Commission (EC) has held a day’s sensitization program for the staff of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre (KAIPTC) on the biometric registration exercise. The exercise which is expected to takeoff from Saturday March 24 to Saturday May 5 2012 will be carried out in four phases in all the regions. As part of the EC’s bid to ensure a safe and smooth registration exercise, the Commission is embarking on a sensitization and education program before the actual registration exercise commences.Since the fourth republic started in 1992, the EC has revised the voters’ register seven times and. In 2004, the EC replaced the voters register in use at the time, which had only a thumb print and a signature of the voter with a new register which bore the photo ID of the voter.Ahead of the December 2012 general elections, the Electoral Commission is once again introducing a new system of registration – a Biometric Register – which includes capturing the bio-data of voters.According to the Greater Accra Regional Director of the EC, Alexander Poku-Akubia, the sensitization will continue in all ten regions. He expressed the hope that the exercise will help reduce the amount of challenges that may arise during the actual registration process.
