The NDC Parliamentary candidate for Jaman South in the Brong Ahafo region, Major Boakye Djan (Rtd) says President Mills’ statement that he will ensure peaceful elections in December, suggest the current peace in the country is under threat. He posited that President Mills was perhaps moved to make that statement because of some unfortunate statements made in recent times by the nation’s politicians, especially members of the opposition NPP. Major Boakye Djan (Rtd) who played a pivotal role in the June 4, 1979 coup d’état was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday. Drawing comparisons with the factors that led to the 1979 coup and the possibility of a coup now fueled by the ongoing debate on the payment of huge amounts as judgement debts, Major Rtd Boakye Djan said recent happenings cannot be compared with past events. He continued that currently there are institutions like Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) and a vibrant media unlike in the past which would check any excesses. On the special unit of the Ghana Armed Forces that graced the 55th Independence anniversary celebration, he accused the NPP of boycotting the anniversary because they have bad intentions about the special unit. He was of the view that the presence of special force deters people who want to cause mayhem in the country. "There is nothing frightening about special units of the military. Only people who have intentions to disrupt our peace are worried [about] creation of Special Forces. "Civil wars in Africa come with post-election counting; where people dispute the results, pick up stones, arms and they start fighting. I believe that the purpose of creating special force is to deter people who want to disrupt our peace, so that we don’t go the Kenya way where about 3,000 people lost their lives, Ivory Coast got disrupted with the same election disputes.’ He rubbished claims by Nana Akufo-Addo that no single blood will be shed in the December polls as no blood was shed in 2008 elections, adding "If Nana Akufo- Addo loses this year’s election it is the end of his political career, so 2012 election cannot be compared with what happened in 2008." When he was challenged by the NPP MP for Okere in the Eastern region, Dan Botwe, that the NPP attended the 55th independence anniversary parade, Boakye Djan said he was not officially notified of their presence. "I was not officially informed that the NPP attended the anniversary ceremony, I was not aware of it, other than the information I heard on radio that the NPP did not attend the ceremony in an official capacity. I have to be informed that they attended in an official capacity, but if they said they attended then I’m sorry". The NPP was represented by a delegation of senior officers led by Fred Oware, First Vice Chairman, because both flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo and National Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey are out of the country. On his part, the MP who is also a former Information Minister under the Kufuor regime dismissed Boakye Djan’s claim that the NPP has bad intentions hence its fright over the creation of special military units. Mr Botwe said Nana Akufo-Addo’s assertion on the BBC Hard talk show that no single blood will be shed in the December polls indicates that he is committed to ensuring peace before, during and after elections. Mr. Botwe maintained that the NPP is prepared to play the game, but cautioned Major Rtd Boakye Gyan not to use his past involvement in coup making to disrupt the country’s peace. He stressed that the NPP will fearlessly resist any attempts to intimidate their supporters. He added that negative propaganda will not affect the fortunes of the party.
