None of the candidates presented by four Junior Secondary Schools in the Awutu area in the Central Region scored between aggregates 6 and 30 to qualify for admission to Senior Secondary School in the 2006/2007 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The District Chief Executive for the Awutu-Effutu-Senya, Mr Solomon Abbam-Quaye announced this at a durbar organised by the chiefs and people of the Awutu Traditional Area to mark their annual Awubia festival at Awutu Beraku. Mr Abbam-Quaye expressed regret that despite the huge investment being made by the government and the Assembly, most pupils were not taking their studies seriously to complement those efforts. He appealed to teachers posted to the area to take their work seriously instead of their quest to enter the University of Education, Winneba to upgrade their knowledge. The DCE urged parents to invest much in their children's education instead of spending heavily on funerals and other pleasures of life. Nana John Sam, Schedule Officer In-Charge of Examinations at the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service at Winneba when contacted confirmed the DCE's statement. He mentioned the schools as the Awutu Bawjiase Catholic JSS, Akufokrodua JSS, Oseikrodua JSS and Ossenso JSS all in the Awutu area. Nana Sam, who was not happy with the results attributed it to a number of factors including refusal of parents to provide the needed school materials for their children. According to him only one school had zero percent in the 2005/2006 BECE and described the current result as unacceptable. He said the District Education Directorate would soon organize durbars with chiefs, parents, teachers and other stakeholders on how best to improve the situation. Source: GNA
