Labour unions should be innovative to improve the welfare of members, instead of relying solely on employers. This is according to Joseph Agalik Agalik, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Chairman of the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).
He says whilst it is important to demand better wages and working conditions, unions could introduce schemes to increase opportunities for workers.
Mr. Agalik says the KNUST local union for instance, is affording members the opportunity to access a housing scheme.
“We are in the process of acquiring land for our members so that when they retire they can also have a place to lay their heads… for maximum of two months, we hope to seal a deal”, he told Luv FM at a ceremony to swear-in FUSSAG Executives at the KNUST.
Mr. Agalik believes the confrontational stance of labour in negotiations with management is no longer tenable.
He says the Association would seek dialogue, whilst resorting to the dictates of the Conditions of Services and Labour Act to press home their demands.
“Apart from our traditional way of fighting for salary increase and better conditions, we also believe in contributing to the development of the institution and even our national structures,” said Mr. Agalik.
National FUSSAG President, Mr. Akuoku Kyei-Baffour, enjoined the new executives to be accountable to its members.
