The Redeem African Leadership Foundation (RALFo), an NGO based in Ghana with a branch in the UK, has called on Ghanaians, especially politicians, to be more tolerant towards one another as the country goes to the polls this year. It acknowledged that tolerating the opposing views is a necessary prerequisite to ensure a violent-free and peaceful general elections in December. RALFo in collaboration with the Electoral Commission, National Commission for Civic Education has been organizing a series of outreach programmes in churches within the Agona districts of the Central Region to educate them on the December elections and the need to maintain the peaceful atmosphere in Ghana. Mr. Chris Arthur, President of RALFo, at the Church Of Pentecost, Dwenho Assembly, Agona Swedru on Sunday, observed that every citizen has equal right to choose which political party he/she wishes to join, saying it is “uncivilized and shameful to become enemies merely because of diverse political views”. He said freedom of association and freedom of speech are enshrined provisions stipulated under the Constitution of Ghana, and therefore, we should understand and respect that principle. “It is unlawful to prevent or intimidate any person who exercises his/her democratic rights. We all have the same rights and freedom under the law,” he maintained. However, he cautioned that there is a corresponding limitation to all the rights, explaining, for instance, freedom of speech does not mean you can tarnish or defame other persons under the guise of “political talk”. “It is becoming popular that those who can insult and defame are those who represent political parties on radios and TV programmes."
