A 19-year-old porter caught with 0.9415 grams of cocaine, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour by a Kumasi circuit court.Issah Mohammed was charged with possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority contrary to section 2 (1) of Act 1990, PNDCL. 236 and pleaded not guilty.
Chief Inspector Archibald Kwasi Fandoh, told the court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Amoh Yartey that, on July 5, 2011, at about 9:00am, a team of police officers from the Highways Patrols Unit in Kumasi who were on their usual duties on the Ejura, Atebubu and Yeji highways spotted the convict collecting money from one Issahaku Amadu at Ejura township.Mohammed and Amadu were arrested and a search conducted on them revealed 30 wrappers of whitish substance believed to be cocaine wrapped in pieces of whitepapers in black polythene, fourteen gold foils, five foil paper wrappers of cocaine and a smoking pipe on the convict.Chief Inspector Fandoh said the accused in his caution statement to the police admitted ownership of the exhibits found on him but stated that it was one Mohammed Adnan who handed the items to him for safe keeping.
However, Amadu in his caution statement denied any wrongdoing and a subsequent search at his resident revealed nothing. He was discharged as nothing incriminating was found on him.According to the prosecutor, the wrapped substances and the sealed smoking pipe were sent to the forensic laboratory in Accra for examination and they were confirmed to be cocaine.Meanwhile the substance has since been destroyed by the order of the presiding judge.
