The cold winds and sporadic showers of Kaliningrad could not stop the Black Challenge, Ghana National Amputee Football Team, from beating Poland 2-0 in their first match at the 31st Amputee Football World Cup in Kaliningrad, Russia.
A goal in each half by Richard Arthur Opentil and Collins Gyamfi was all the Black Challenge needed to set the tone for their quest to win gold at the mundial, as the tournament takes off in the Russia enclave.
New entrants, Poland proved stubborn in the beginning of the game with some spectacular display of typical European football characterized by inter-positional passes that nearly destabilized the Ghanaians at the earlier stages of the game but the fighting spirit in the Ghanaians was manifest as the game progressed.
Richard Arthur Opentil, a professional player in Turkey finished off a good move between him, Collins and Joseph Amoh to register Ghana’s first goal. The game progressed with a few threats from each side until the first half ended.
The second half began with some cold intermittent showers but the determined Black Challenge kept their pace crowning it with another goal from Collins Gyamfi, Africa’s goal king. With the game drawing to an end, the Polish made some inroads into the Ghanaian half but that could not yield any results.
The Ghanaians missed some chances at the latter parts of the game which could be attributed to an improved Polish side that has moved from their amateurish position to a force to reckon with in Amputee Football.
Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia, His Excellency Dr. Seth Koranteng, who was with the team at the opening ceremony and watched the game beside Mr. Francis Adjetey Sowah, President of the Ghana Amputee Football Federation (GAFF), as well as the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA), praised the players for the great game and advised them against complacency.
Dr Koranteng later presented some energy drinks and items to the team to strengthen them as they progress in the competition. He also presented similar products to the Liberian team in the spirit of African Unity.
Before the opening match between Russia and Argentina, group members of Ghana, there was a beautiful opening ceremony to kick start the competition.
Russia beat Argentina by 5-0 whilst Iran drew 0-0 with El Salvador in Ghana’s group; Liberia was beaten 3-0 by England in the other group.
