The Ghana Immigration Service has denied speculations that a 16 year old Chinese girl who died in Ghana last week was in their custody. According to the Service, all Chinese in their custody like other foreign nationals are being treated well and have access to their Embassies. The Immigration Services reaction follows a statement by the Chinese government expressing reservation about the death and the detention of its nationals for their alleged involvement in various crimes including illegal mining. The statement posted on the country’s Foreign Ministry website raised serious concerns about the continued detention of over ninety Chinese nationals and urged Ghanaian authorities to protect the rights and safety of its citizens. But the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Immigration Service, Francis Palm Deti tells Joy News six of the detainees have been granted bail on health grounds and Embassy officials are fully aware of the condition of the rest. “We have about 95 Chinese nationals in our custody...it is a detention area, it is not a cell or a prison so we treat them humanely...hopefully they would be processed and a decision taken on them.” Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni told Joy News he has had a “long chart” with the Chinese Ambassador in Accra where he was “apprised” about the death of the girl. He said due process would be followed in the case of the remaining Chinese nationals in custody.
