Kingsley Owusu-Achau, the owner and bankroller of Bechem United football club, has donated a 3-bedroom house to the winners of the 2012 and 2011 National Best Teacher award recipients.
The gesture is a corporate social responsibility project under his real estates company, Top Kings Limited, aimed at constructing and celebrating teacher excellence.
‘‘It wouldn’t be remissive of us not to acknowledge the sterling performance of our teachers, if even if we were not the corporate institution that we are today.
We did not award teacher’s popularity; we awarded teaching excellence and the fact that teachers have made Ghana a better place. That demonstrates our contagious enthusiasm for teachers, teaching, learning and excellence.’’, a company statement explained.
Owusu-Achau, a known philanthropist who recently donated cash in thousands to the national female teams, described the donation as ‘‘a mark of our respect and recognition of teacher’s invaluable contribution to the building of our nation.’’ He explained further, ‘‘having exceptionally instilled the love and values of learning to generations of students in the Ghanaian society in the post-independence era to shape careers and influence adult lives, every teacher – be it in counselling, administration or classroom - deserve recognition and respect.’’
Asked what the foremost motivation was for becoming a keynote sponsor, Owusu-Achau said, ‘‘reminiscing long and hard about the plight of teachers, we felt it timely, appropriate and expedient to share a small piece of our success with the teaching community – a 3-Bedroom house to the National Best Teacher Award recipient. With our wealth of experience in the property business and the fact that we comprehend the gravity and magnitude of the accommodation challenges teachers face, we decided to come forth with this house donation.’’
Currently, the Bechem owner is continuing a long-standing scholarship effort for the unprivileged children in the Bechem area of the Brong Ahafo Region.
The Top Kings Limited company currently sponsor 3 students through to Senior High School and beyond and 3 girls through nursing training school whilst making donations to charities on annual basis.
