The big talk and razzmatazz that characterizes big fight has began ahead of the November 10 clash between Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe and George ‘Red Tiger’ Ashie for the WBO Africa lightweight title at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The bout headlines the maiden boxing promotion put together by Baby Jet Promotions owned by Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan and is expected to be one of the biggest local grudge fights in recent times.
In a joint exclusive interview, both boxers were brutally frank with each other and exchanged the hottest verbal ‘jabs’ in the studios of Joy Sports on Thursday. Emmanuel Tagoe who holds the Inter-continental super featherweight title says Ashie has no pedigree and will leave the fight a victim of his devastating skill.
“He says he is a Tiger but I will tame him by setting and trap for him. The Game Boy does not lose the game. The only fight I lost in my career was not a proper fight by my estimation and I have since been on an unending winning streak,” Ashie told Joy Sports.
He also added that he would use the November 10 bout to retire George Ashie.
In a sharp reply George Ashie said “he is only talking big let’s enter the ring and see what will happen. I have been waiting for this fight for a very long time and finally it is here. What I am waiting to do is to permanently shut his big mouth. When the Tiger sees its prey it gets wild and that’s exactly what I will do to Tagoe in the ring.”
Tagoe, who has 19 wins and one loss making up his record is trained by the legendary Azumah Nelson who previously revealed to Joy Sports that he will produce the nation’s next generation of world champions. “I have learnt a lot from the legend and our relationship is great. I will make him proud that night. No boxer from George Ashie’s Gym can face me and survive my venom,” Tagoe told Joy Sports.
Ashie on the other hand shares trainer Godwin Nii Dzanie Kotey, a.k.a. Alloway with former world champion Joshua Clottey, has 23 wins and three losses making his professional record. He also holds the Commonwealth lightweight title which he won after defeating fellow Ghanaian Bilal Mohammed in April 2012. “Tagoe is forgetting that Lante Addy who handed him his first and only defeat is from our Attoh Quarshie Gym. I will make sure he falls again,” Ashie who is a product of the Mortein boxing league said with a cheeky smile.
Also featuring on the bill which is a collaboration between Baby Jet Promotions and Box Office Promotions is the national super bantamweight championship between Raymond Commey and Emmanuel Quartey and a national super featherweight championship Prince Ofotsu and Michael Pappoe.
Former Ghana amateur boxing team captain Bastie Samir will slug it out with Nigeria’s Alani Sulaimon in an international middleweight contest. Another former national amateur boxer Ahmed Saraku faces Eric Kwadey in a six round middleweight contest.
