Access Bank (Ghana) Limited has extended its philanthropic gesture to victims of the recent floods that wrecked havoc in many communities in the southern part of the country. The bank has opened a Disaster Relief Account (0011620022561 ) to support victims of the recent floods in the country. Staff of the bank contributed seed money to set up the account. According to Mr. Yomi Akapo, Country MD, Access Bank is partnering NADMO to set up the Disaster Relief Account as a sustainable source of funding for disaster management in the country. Staff of the bank contributed the seed money for the account, which Mr. Akapo believes will ensure rapid response to future disasters. The initiative is in line with Access Bank’s corporate commitment to humanitarian assistance and social interventions in the country. The Bank also donated items worth over Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 5,000) to the National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr. Kofi Portuphy, in Accra. Items donated include; 30 bags of rice, 30 boxes of cooking oil, beddings including blankets and used clothing items among others. Making the presentation, Mr. Yomi Akapo, Country MD, said “we were touched by the plight of the victims and the loss of lives and property and therefore decided to support the victims”. While commending the efforts of Government and NADMO for the protection of lives and property, Mr. Akapo urged other corporate organizations and philanthropists to continue the momentum created to provide relief for the afflicted. He said the enormous challenge has been the availability of resources to ensure timely and adequately response from relief agencies. Since launching in Ghana last year, Access Bank has embarked on a number of social intervention programmes and initiatives including a $10,000 donation for the Centenary Celebration of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and support for the Teshie orphanage. Access Bank (Ghana) maintains a CSR policy which is in line with the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy. The bank’s initiatives cover five key areas; Education, Environment, Health, Arts and Sports. Access Bank is currently sponsoring the telecast of the World Cup, to ensure that all Ghanaians enjoy the euphoria and excitement of the games.
