The brazen power struggle at the Ghana Olympic Committee dominated affairs at the 35th MTN Sports Writers Association of Ghana Awards Night held in Accra, Saturday.
The occasion was to reward hardworking sports personalities whose tremendous efforts in 2009 put the country’s name on the world map but the dignitaries could not help but demand immediate ceasefire between the BT Baba led faction and the Prof Dodoo faction, a cancerous tussle at the Ghana Olympic Committee which is threatening the very foundation of sports development in the country.
Guest of honour for the occasion, Okyenehene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin stated that public offices must not be seen as the bonafide properties of public officials.
The office, he noted must be seen as an opportunity to serve and to provide best solutions to the many sporting, educational and developmental challenges majority of Ghanaians face.
He further admonished Ghanaians to eschew mediocrity and strife for the best at all times. Even though he commended the Black Stars for a great performance in the just ended World Cup in South Africa he was of the firm believe that the Stars could have gone further.
President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Mr Ackah Anthony called for a presidential intervention in the two-year old struggle at the GOC.
He said Ghana’s participation in the International Olympic sanctioned competitions hangs in a balance due to the power play at the GOC.
He urged the warring factions to put the nation before their individual interests and to find an amicable solution.
Youth and Sports Minister Akua Sena Dansua assured Ghanaians, the government is on track to resolving the problems at GOC but did not fail to enumerate the dire consequences to the nation if an amicable solution is not brokered soon.
According to her, a £30 million project initiated by the Olympic UK to be implemented by the British Council for Ghanaian youth has been stalled as a result of the impasse.
“I therefore wish to use this opportunity to urge all parties in the impasse to reconcile their differences so that the country does not lose out further in the international sports arena,” she stated.
