Adom News listeners across Ghana and other parts of the world have donated generously to raise over GHC12,000 to assist eight-month-old Deborah Doler to go for open heart surgery.
The child was diagnosed with hole-in-heart and was scheduled for surgery months ago at the cost of GHC24,000 but the Ghana Heart Foundation took half of the cost and asked the parents, Moses and Susan Doler to solicit for help elsewhere to cover the remaining GHC12,000.
The Ghana Heart Foundation gave the parents a formal letter to go solicit for funds and they brought the letter and the child to Adom News about two months ago.
Adom News took the matter up on that same day and put a humble request before generous listeners. The parents were given the opportunity to tell listeners about the difficulties the child goes through breathing and how she sweats at night and unable to sleep without the electric fan.
The baby herself was heard breathing with extreme difficulty live on air. The situation obviously touched the hearts of listeners and they began to phone in with their donations on the very night of the request.
Over a period of two months, Adom News listeners in Ghana and other countries such as Germany, USA, London, Belgium, Italy, France, Amsterdam, Holland, Israel, Canada and others poured in their donations in lips and bounds.
But the Valco Trust Fund in Ghana settled the matter when they entered the fray with a whopping donation of over GHC7,000, while the staff of Zenith Bank Ghana also supported with GHC2,000 and Goldfields Tarkwa Mines, Crew also brought in GHC1,100.
In all Adom News was also to raise over GHC14,000 in cash and cheques, and have therefore presented cheques to the tune of GHC12,000 in the name of the National Cardiothoracic Centre for the surgery, plus another GHC2,000 plus cheque in the name of Moses Doler for medical bills and upkeep of the child after the surgery.
Adom News Editor, Nii Narku Dowuona presented the cheques on behalf of the generous listeners and of the Multimedia Group Limited, and thanked all the donors for their generosity.
He expressed the hope that Deborah would have second chance to life and become a significant person in future.
Mother of the child, Susan Doler, who took delivery of the cheques was full of gratitude and tears, but the dad, who was a bit more composed listed some of the donors he had personally met and expressed profound gratitude to them all.
He assured listeners that the child would be taken to surgery immediately and listeners would be kept posted from time to time.
In a related development, three-year-old Stephen Danquah, who also went to surgery after drinking costic soda is now doing great.
The boy could not swallow food for almost two years since he drunk the acid, but since the surgery he has been eating and playing well.
Mother of the boy, Mercy Acquah told Adom News the boy is doing well. She is also working on starting a trade with the balance of over GHC1,000 after Adom New listeners paid the GHC3,500 for surgery plus some other bills that came with it.
