The Ghana Highway Authority has announced the Adomi bridge will be closed to traffic from Monday, March 10, 2014. It will remain closed until 2016.
This is to make way for repair works on the only bridge linking the Volta and Estern Regions as well other parts of the country.
The famous bridge spanning the Volta River from Atimpoku to Akrade, was designed in 1957 by William Brown, of the Engineers Fox and Partners.
Travellers to Ho and other parts of the country through the eastern corridor would be ferried by a pontoon from Atimpoku to Akrade, where an alternative route has been constructed for light duty vehicles. They will connect at Juapong to continue their journey.
Meanwhile, work on another road from Ho to Sogafe for heavy duty vehicles travelling to Accra is said to be behind schedule.
Joy News correspondent, Mawuli Agbi reports that a brief ceremony will be performed ahead of the closure of the bridge.
The development is likely to affect economic activity as thousands of residents from the area as well Akosombo and adjoining towns briskly trade their wares such as "abolo with one man thousand" fish, roasted snails and shrimps.
