Ghanaian movie ‘Azali’ was named the overall winning movie at the 2019 edition of the Golden Movie Awards Africa. The movie, produced by a ‘first-timer’ in the business of filmmaking, Kwabena Gyansah won over five awards including ‘Golden Most Promising Actor/Actress’, ‘Golden Sound Track’, ‘Golden Cinematography’, ‘Golden Movie Drama’. “This is my first film; this is my first feature film. Yeah I’m really proud, because aside this Golden Movie [Awards Africa], it has also won like 11 or 10 at the recently held Ghana Movie Awards, went to AFRIM also won three awards including ‘Best Feature Film’ and it has gone far in terms of the exposure to the rest of the world. Several film festivals have selected it and it done quite well,” an elated Kwabena Gyansah said. Ghanaian movie personalities present were delighted that Ghanaian productions picked most of the awards.   Last year, many industry players lamented that neighbouring countries, who participated in the awards, grabbed most of the awards at the detriment of the host country. Kwabena Gyansah, who described ‘Azali’ as authentic, told JoyNews’ MzGee the uniqueness of the film’s storyline, is the reason for its prominence. “Adjetey Anang and Akofa [Edjeani Asiedu] had to undertake Dagbani classes, so they spoke Dagbani throughout and even when Adjetey followed the young girl to Accra to look for her, she had the northern accents, so you need to see to appreciate his talent. I mean the natives who were on set couldn’t believe that he wasn’t one of them. That’s how authentic he was as well as Akorfa,” the producer revealed.  He added that “it’s unique, something different, something unlike the normal stories we keep telling, I think that’s why it’s doing well.” The 5th edition of the Golden Movie Awards Africa, which had 25 competitive categories, took place at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel on Saturday, August 24.
