Former Hearts of Oak coach Kim Grant has described the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a “reflection of systematic incompetence.”
Grant’s statement follows Ghana’s poor showing in the AFCON qualification series.
The Black Stars failed to qualify for the continental showpiece for the first time in 21 years, finishing button in Group-F with only three points.
In a Facebook post, he said the “Black Stars' failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 as a devastating reflection of systemic incompetence, a lack of accountability, and an ongoing disregard for the basics of football management.”
He attributed the team’s decline to persistent issues, including poor scouting, political interference, and substandard recruitment, despite access to a global pool of talented players.
“Tactical decisions highlight a glaring lack of experience, with an inability to implement a coherent playing system that suits the players’ strengths. Instead, we see square pegs forced into round holes, wasting talent and failing to maximise potential on the pitch." He stated.
“Adding to this mess is the arrogance of some players who believe their status in Europe’s top leagues makes them above African football. They fail to understand that the dynamics of playing for the national team are entirely different. The quality of teammates at their clubs does not translate to the national stage, and their inability—or unwillingness—to adapt only deepens the crisis. This egotistical mindset is a betrayal of the jersey and the nation.”
Grant further emphasized the need for urgent reforms within Ghana football, specifically calling for a change in leadership at the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
“Ghana football needs leadership with integrity, tactical expertise, and a commitment to excellence. The excuses must end, and the work to restore the Black Stars’ pride must begin now,” he asserted.
The Prague Raptors F.C. coach's comments come at a time when the executive committee of the Ghana Football Association will hold a meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on Ghana’s poor AFCON failure.
