President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised to transform Ghana by improving the economy and changing the face of politics.

He has assured the citizens of rooting out corruption and its related activities in the country.

Two months after he was sworn in as the 5th President of the 4th Republic, I explore his achievements so far.

Assembling team of ministers:

President Akufo-Addo is on record as the first President to assemble his team of Ministers within the space of a month.

Despite having 36 ministers – largest in the country since independence – he was able to collaborate with Parliament to fast-track their vetting in record time.

He swore-in the last batch of 11 ministerial nominees on February 10 at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

Free senior high school programme:

The President boosted his approval rating in the country by announcing his government will implement his flagship programme free senior high school (SHS) program in September, 2017.

He told a gathering when he addressed the 60th Anniversary celebration of Okuapeman School that students will not be made to pay any money.

“Free SHS will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level. I also want to state clearly again that we have a well-thought-out plan that involves the building of new public senior high schools and cluster public senior high schools,” he explained.

This has received positive feedback from many Ghanaians many of whom believe it is a bold initiative from the President.

However, some social commentators and political opponents are worried about the source of funding for the programme. The initial suggestion by the Senior Minister, Dr Yaw Osafo Maafo that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) might consider using reserved oil money known as Heritage Fund to finance the policy drew frowns.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta later doused the tensed situation by saying government has no intention to use the Fund.

Is the erratic power supply known as dumsor back?

The power situation has not improved since the President took over the reign of government. In fact it has gotten worse after a slight improvement was recorded in the last quarter of 2016.

Residents in the Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions are largely faced with an erratic power supply localised as dumsor.

The frustration of Ghanaians are no longer directed at former President John Mahama, who is blamed by sections of the population for allowing the crisis to escalate, but on the new President who promised to solve the problem.

The creation of the office of Public Prosecutor:

The President has not done anything yet to drum home his dislike for corruption. He is yet to create the Office of the Public Prosecutor who is expected to prosecute persons who breach the financial regulations of the country.

President has more days ahead of him to put into action his many campaign promises, the basis on which he was massively voted for ahead of his predecessor President Mahama.

Tracker will be keeping track of the monthly actions of the President to get a better picture about how he is achieving the many campaign promises made to Ghanaians.

I will also report to see what progress President Akufo-Addo makes in the areas of education, job creation, manufacturing, security and foreign policy.
