A parade organized by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in search of guards who are accused of demanding sex from traders in a form of a ‘barter system’ has been aborted. James Dorgbetor, Public Relations officer of the AMA told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh the parade was aborted because the accusers failed to turn up. Scores of traders have alleged that some AMA guards demand sex from them in return for their confiscated goods. According to the women, when their goods are seized for selling at prohibited areas, the guards deliberately quote exorbitant price tags which they (guards) are aware the traders will be unable to pay and demand sex as pre-condition for the release of the wares. One of the women confirmed to Asempa FM that she had, on more than one occasion fallen victim to the guards' demands largely because she was unable to pay the amount. The allegation has forced the AMA officials to begin investigations into the allegations beginning with an identification parade, but James Dorgbetor said the parade ceremony has had to be aborted because the accusers failed to turn up. That notwithstanding, he said the AMA is bent on getting to the bottom of the allegations. He said severe sanctions will be taken against the culprit(s). He also dismissed assertions that the parade had been poorly publicized, explaining that the platform (radio stations) used by the accusers was the same platform used in announcing the parade.
