A combined team of police and an Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) task force demolished the Fruits of Life Ministry church building at Bubiashie on Wednesday for creating a noise nuisance and operating without a permit.Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, Director of Public Health Department of the AMA, said the measure was a necessary deterrent to churches that defy orders to "stop work and produce permit."He said when construction began on the house of worship, Okaikwei South Sub-Metro officers of the Public Health Department served notice to church representatives that they must produce a building permit or stop the work. He explained that they defied these orders, leading to the initial structure’s demolition in April 2012.He reported that the pastor then went on to put up a wooden structure but failed to produce a permit allowing him to operate in a residential area.Dr Boateng said residents of Bubiashie started complaining of excessive noise emanating from the church at night, adding that his officers visited the premises again and served notice that the structure would be demolished if the Ministry did not remove it voluntarily. He said the church defied the orders again and that the AMA Taskforce went to the premises at 1045 hours on Wednesday to pull the wooden structure down. He explained that the church’s activities were of serious concern to the community since the high noise levels could cause heart problems. The pastor in charge of the church was not available for comment.
