The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), says it is leaving no stone unturned to prevent hawking in and around the new Achimota Transport Terminal.
The terminal, which began operations on December 21, 2009 is a centre of attraction for most hawkers, who hitherto operated at the old lorry station.
The hawkers have erected unauthorised structures adjacent to the new terminal which is gradually turning into a mini market, contrary to the AMA's plans to put up uniform structures outside the terminal for the traders to ensure proper control of their operations .
To enforce its decision, a taskforce of the AMA on Tuesday night descended on the hawkers to eject them from the area to forestall unplanned trading activities which characterise lorry stations in the country.
The terminal has a modem canteen to meet the needs of commuters, but according to some passengers, food at the canteen is too expensive.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the AMA, Alfred Vanderpuije, has met chairpersons of its 11 sub-metropolitan assemblies to outline their core mandate and other issues of concern to the assembly.
He called on them to work towards the attainment of the AMA's vision of modernisng the city and stressed the need for corporation between them and sub-metropolitan directors to ensure peaceful working environment.
Mr Vanderpuije said the sub-metros would be provided with waste collection vehicles to improve waste management in the metropolis.
He expressed the assembly's commitment to ensuring that its vision on moving from waste to energy was realised.
The programme, due to take off this year, is expected to provide alternative energy sources for the metropolis and also cut down the assembly's cost on waste management.
