Murray plays great in opening victory
Andy Murray bt Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-2 6-3 - Murray was in sterling form to start his Australian Open. The Brit was never broken in the match and didn't look like he was lacking any sharpness as he took down the 18-year-old Germany in just over two hours.
Murray didn't have to strain himself too much in large part because Zverev was spraying the ball all over the place. Murray simply played solid tennis and watched Zverev make 43 unforced errors to pick up an easy victory at Margaret Court Arena.
Venus crushed by Konta
Johanna Konta bt Venus Williams 6-4 6-2 - Williams's stay in Melbourne was short and not particularly dramatic either after Britain's Konta produced a stunning performance. The No. 8 seed was thoroughly dominated by the 24-year-old at Rod Laver Arena in a disappointing showing for the seven-time Grand Slam winner. Konta was excellent in the return game, winning 48 percent of the points on Williams's first serve and converting five of eight break points. This marked Konta's first ever match in the Australian Open main draw and the Brit looked right at home while booking her spot in the next round as she builds off the momentum from the run to the fourth round at last year's U.S. Open.
Muguruza dominant in first round win
Garbine Muguruza bt Anett Kontaveit 6-0 6-4 - Muguruza wasn't expected to have any trouble with Kontaveit, and she didn't. The No. 3 seed needed just 60 minutes to dispatch the overmatched Estonian at Rod Laver Arena to kick off the day from Melbourne. Kontaveit managed just 11 points in the entire first set and never had a break point as Muguruza drove her all over the court. The second set was more competitive, but only slightly. Muguruza didn't face a break point, again, and made just eight unforced errors to clinch an easy win in her first round match.
Keys starts slow, finishes strong
Madison Keys bt Zarina Diyas 7-6 (5) 6-1- Keys didn't play her best in the first set of her opening match at the Australian Open, but he finished in fine form to book her spot in the second round. The American committed an astounding 33 unforced errors in the first set alone, but rescued herself with 16 winners to Diyas' one and barely captured the first set. Things got much easier in the second set, with just six unforced errors as she looked like an entirely different and entirely worthy of the 15th seed while wrapping up the match.
Anderson struggles, retires with injury
Rajeev Ram bt Kevin Anderson 7-6 (4) 6-7 (4) 6-3 3-0 retired - Anderson and Ram met in a clash of University of Illinois products, but it didn't go so well for the tournament's No. 11 seed. Anderson struggled from the start with 24 unforced errors in the first set that eventually went to Ram in a tiebreak. The South Africa took the second set tiebreak, but things went downhill quickly from there. He struggled to move as Ram took the third set and trailing 3-0 in the fourth set, Anderson was forced to retire. There was no immediate word on Anderson's injury, but he entered the tournament battling a knee injury.
Ivanovic eases into second round
Ana Ivanovic bt Tammi Patterson 6-2 6-3 - Ivanovic got off to a fast start in her first round match as she showed the Australian no mercy in her home Grand Slam. The former world No. 1 wasn't spectacular, but her forehand was very strong and she was sharp enough to make the match look like a walk in the park. Ivanovic never faced a break point and, despite converting just 33 percent of her break opportunities, was never in danger of losing her opening match in Melbourne.
