Scores of ruling National Democratic Congress’ supporters in Tamale vented their spleen on the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia accusing him of unduly disqualifying some parliamentary aspirants from contesting the primaries of the newly created Sagnarigu constituency.
In all, eight persons were vetted out of which four were disqualified.
Those who passed the vetting included Hajia Boya Gariba(Deputy Women’s and Children’s Affairs), Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini(Night Editor, Daily Graphic), Richard Andani Yakubu, Olivia Hawa Yahaya(Regional School Feeding Programme Coordinator), and Salifu Sualisu Aladira(Former Tamale MCE).
Those who were disqualified included Alhaji Mohammed Amin Adam Abio (NYEP Regional Coordinator), Mohammed Abdul Salam (Metro NHIS Coordinator) and Iddrisu Andani Mohasu.
According to Joy FM’s Northern Regional correspondent, Clement Boateng who was at the scene, the supporters of the disqualified aspirants besieged the offices of the Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale and threatened to lynch the party’s General Secretary who they accused of supervising the 'unwholesome' vetting.
The supporters gathered at the RCC chanting war songs and swearing at Asiedu Nketia. The angry mob managed to hold their party’s General Secretary and other members of the vetting committee hostage for hours.
It took a military reinforcement to dispel the angry supporters who were unhappy that their candidates have been disqualified without justification. They argued that all the candidates be allowed to contest the party’s primaries which has been scheduled for next week.
The vetting committee and Asiedu Nketia were however not immediately available to react to the stand-off.
