A group of angry youth last Sunday destroyed the windscreen of a Volta River Authority (VRA) pick-up vehicle when there was power outage during the World Cup match between Ghana and Serbia. Deputy Superintendent of Police John Kwabena Arthur, Dormaa Municipal Police Commander, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency. He said the police were alerted a few minutes after the lights went off that a group of young men suspected to be angered by the outage was heading towards the VRA offices. He said when his men got there the youth had already damaged the vehicle and left the VRA premises and therefore could not arrest anybody. "My men also learnt that the security man on duty at the VRA offices, fearing for his life, fled in view of the uncompromising mood of the youth," DSP Arthur added. He said his men also gathered that the mob regrouped and with shouts of "Ye ni abre koo" loosely translated "Our eyes are red", rushed to the residence of the Municipal VRA Officer but did not meet him. DSP Arthur gave the assurance that the police were taking adequate measures to beef up security at the VRA offices to offset a recurrence of the incident throughout the World Cup tournament. Meanwhile Mr Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Chairman of the Municipal Security Council and Municipal Chief Executive with some other officers expressed disgust at the incident on the local FM stations. They advised the youth to exercise restraint and to seek redress to their grievances appropriately. Mr Asamoah gave the assurance that the Municipal Assembly would liaise with the VRA to ensure that such power outages did not recur. Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, Dormaahene, urged the youth to remain calm and not to do anything to jeopardize the peace.
