A private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Ayenini, has described as illegal the arrest and detention of the driver of sacked deputy Minister of Communications, Victoria Hammah.

Lawrence Quayeson was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of secretly recording a conversation between her boss and a third party.

A voice purported to be that of Victoria Hammah was heard rebuking a colleague deputy minister, Rachel Appoh for having a running battle with her substantive minister, Nana Oye Lithur.

Hammah also vowed to make one million dollars before bowing out of politics.

The tape went viral on social networking sites and subsequently on major media outlets.

Barely 24 hours after the tape was made public, information minister, through a press statement, announced the dismissal of the deputy minister.

No official reason was given for the dismissal even though sources close to government told Joy News that the dismissal had something to do with the leaked tape.

Victoria Hammah consequently lodged a complaint against her driver, accusing him of secretly recording her conversation. Quayeson was then arrested by the Mile 7 police.

Speaking to Joy News on the arrest, legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Ayenini,  said the arrest was illegal.

"The police cannot point to any law that criminalizes that act, if indeed he is the one who did it. In the very least, he might even qualify as a whistle blower, who ought to be protected.

"They should release him without any further delay," he emphasized.

 Meanwhile, Joy News can confirm that Lawrence Quayeson was released Friday evening.
